How to Become a Civil Judge in Pakistan: Eligibility and Preparation Roadmap
Many law graduates dream of becoming a Civil Judge-cum-Judicial Magistrate. It is a respected career, and the entry path is a competitive written test followed by an interview. This article explains the usual route and how to prepare. Details differ by province, so always read the latest advertisement before you apply.
What does a Civil Judge do?
A Civil Judge-cum-Judicial Magistrate hears civil cases such as disputes about property, contracts and family matters, and also conducts criminal trials as a magistrate. It is the first rung of the judiciary.
The usual route
- Complete an LLB degree from a recognised university.
- Meet the eligibility conditions given in the advertisement, such as age limit, nationality, and experience or enrolment requirements, if any.
- Apply to the commission. In many provinces the provincial public service commission runs the test on behalf of the High Court. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, applications are generally invited through the KPPSC for posts under the Peshawar High Court.
- Pass the written test. It checks legal knowledge and English.
- Appear in the interview before the selection committee.
- Receive training at a judicial academy before and after posting.
What the written test usually covers
- Constitution of Pakistan (1973)
- Civil Procedure Code (CPC) and Code of Criminal Procedure (Cr.P.C.)
- Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and the Qanun-e-Shahadat (law of evidence)
- Contract Act, Specific Relief Act and the Transfer of Property Act
- Muslim family laws and limitation law
- English comprehension, grammar and essay writing
- General knowledge, Pakistan Studies and Islamic studies
How to prepare
- Read the bare acts. Read the sections themselves, not only guide books.
- Learn important cases of the Supreme Court and the High Court for each subject.
- Solve past papers. They show which topics are repeated.
- Practise legal writing. Write short answers and a judgment-style note on a case.
- Improve English. A weak English paper can spoil a strong legal paper.
- Prepare for the interview. Be ready to explain basic procedures in simple words.
Qualities of a good judge
Honesty, patience, a clear mind and a love of justice matter more than speed. Start building these habits as a student by reading carefully, listening to both sides and writing clearly.
